Can You Bring a Dab Pen on a Plane?
You've booked your tickets and packed your bags, and then it hits you: can I actually get on a plane with my dab pen?
The answer is a little bit complicated.
The device itself can fly in your carry-on bag, like any vape. What you put in it is the problem.
So while it is possible to bring a dab pen on a plane, there are strict rules on the battery, and cannabis concentrate brings legal risk.

TSA Regulations for Dab Pens & Vaping Devices
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) handles security screening at airports in the United States.
According to their website, electronic smoking devices are allowed in carry-on bags only, not checked bags. Lithium ion batteries must be 100 Wh or less, and you need to stop the device from switching on by accident.
The device does not need to go in your liquids bag. Liquids, such as e-liquid bottles, must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item, in a single quart-sized bag.
You are not allowed to use your dab pen or any other vaping device on the plane, and you can't charge it on board either.
The FAA calls vaping on an aircraft dangerous and a federal offense.

State and Local Laws on Dab Pens & Vaping
Most dab pens are used for cannabis concentrates, and that is where the legal risk lies.
Marijuana is still a controlled substance under US federal law, and airport security is federal, even when you fly between two states where cannabis is legal.
TSA officers don't search for drugs. However, the TSA says that if they find an illegal substance during screening, they refer it to law enforcement.
Cannabis laws differ from state to state and country to country. Carrying concentrate into a place where it is illegal can lead to fines or criminal charges.
Many states and cities also ban vaping in places like schools, public transportation and government buildings. Check the local rules where you are going.

Safety Considerations for Traveling with a Dab Pen
Dab pens run on lithium batteries, which can overheat or catch fire if damaged or short-circuited.
That is why they must stay in the cabin, where crew can deal with a problem fast. To lower the risk:
- Use a dab pen that is in good working condition and has been properly maintained
- Switch it off or lock it, and keep it in a case so the button can't be pressed
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and care
- Keep your dab pen away from heat sources, such as open flames or direct sunlight
- Do not leave your dab pen unattended while it is charging
- Do not tamper with or modify your dab pen in any way
- Carry spare batteries in your carry-on with the terminals covered
Tell a flight attendant right away if your device gets hot, swells or starts to smoke.
