Can I Fly to Hawaii With a Vape Pen?

Planning a trip to Hawaii and wondering if you can bring your vape pen on the plane?

The short answer is yes, you can fly to Hawaii with a vape pen.

There is one rule that matters most: it has to go in your carry-on, not your checked luggage.

Bringing A Vape Pen In Your Carry-On Bag

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screens passengers and bags before every flight from US airports.

According to the TSA, electronic cigarettes, vape pens and other vaping devices are allowed in carry-on bags only.

Your vape does not need to be charged to get through security, but you can't charge or use it on the plane. Keep it switched off or locked, and be ready for an officer to inspect it.

Packing Your Vape Pen In Your Checked Luggage

Don't. Vapes and spare lithium batteries are banned from checked bags because they can catch fire in the cargo hold.

If your bag is checked at the gate, take your vape and spare batteries out and keep them with you in the cabin.

In Hawaii, vaping is legal for adults, but state law treats vapes like other tobacco products, with an age limit and rules on where they can be sold.

Guidance From TSA

The TSA allows vapes in carry-on bags only, and lithium ion batteries must be 100 Wh or less. The FAA's vape guidance adds that you must not use or charge them on the aircraft.

Bottles of e-liquid in your carry-on must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and fit in your quart-sized liquids bag.

Can I Fly from the US to Hawaii with a Vape Pen and a Cartridge with Cannabis Oil?

Don't. Marijuana is still a controlled substance under US federal law, and TSA security is federal, even on flights within the US.

TSA officers don't search for drugs, but if they find an illegal substance during screening, they refer it to law enforcement.

Can I Buy Vape Pen and Cartridges in Hawaii?

Yes. Vapes and e-liquids are sold legally in Hawaii, but only to adults 21 and older.

Hawaii's Act 122 prohibits selling tobacco products and e-cigarettes to anyone under 21, and federal law has set the same minimum age nationwide since December 2019.

Hawaii also counts vapes and e-liquids as tobacco products, so stores must sell them face to face, not from self-service displays.
