So, can you bring a vape pen on a plane to Cancun?

The short answer is we advise against it. Mexico has banned the import and sale of vapes, and customs officials can confiscate them.

Flying To Cancun With a Vape Pen

US airport rules still let you carry a vape pen on the plane. The problem is what happens when you land in Mexico.

In January 2025, Mexico amended its constitution so that the law will sanction all activity related to e-cigarettes and vapes. The reform prohibits domestic and foreign trade in these devices.

In December 2025, Mexico's Senate approved a health law reform that bans the import, export, distribution and sale of e-cigarettes and vapes, with prison terms of one to eight years for sellers and suppliers. The reform is aimed at the supply side and excludes consumers.

Even so, customs officials can seize a vape you bring in. Leaving your vape pen at home is the safest choice.

Can You Buy Vape Pens in Cancun?

You may see vapes for sale in Cancun's tourist areas, but selling them is illegal under Mexican law. Buying from these sellers supports an illegal trade, and the products are unregulated.

We recommend you don't buy vapes in Mexico. If you need nicotine during your trip, consider bringing an approved nicotine replacement product such as patches or gum, and check Mexican rules for those before you go.

Airline Regulations for Vape Pens

On flights leaving the US, TSA allows vapes only in carry-on bags, not checked luggage. You must prevent the device from switching on by accident.

Each lithium-ion battery must be 100 watt-hours or less. There is no TSA rule limiting a vape to a certain length or width, and earlier claims on this page about that were wrong.

E-liquid in your carry-on follows TSA's liquids rules. Airlines can set their own limits on the number of devices, so check with yours.

Airport Security for Vape Pens

At the security checkpoint, your carry-on goes through the scanner. A TSA officer may take a closer look at your vape pen.

Be honest if asked about it. The TSA officer has the final say on whether an item is allowed through.

Passing US security does not mean the vape is allowed into Mexico. Mexican customs applies Mexican law on arrival.

Additional Considerations

If you do travel with a vape, it must stay in the cabin. Vapes are not allowed in checked bags, so never pack one in a suitcase.

Vaping on the plane is not allowed. Keep the device switched off or locked, and keep spare batteries in a case.
